Jerky Treats

High value rewards for training purposes seem to be filling pet shops at the moment but just be aware of using “jerky” or dried meat treats especially cheap versions originating in China.

The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) have 25 confirmed toxicity cases in the UK and suspect probably many more that have gone unreported. Similar cases have been seen around the world recently.

The effect has been seen most often in small breed dogs although this may be due to the proportionally larger amount of jerky ingested compared to larger dogs.

The effects are on the kidney tubules (Fanconi Syndrome) and can present as lethargy, vomiting, inappetance and increased drinking and urinating.

The advice is to use such treats sparingly and avoid all products which originate in China. If you have any questions then please give us call.
